In the Philippines, the retail industry contributes to about 15% of the gross national product (GDP) and 20% of the employment, continues to grow at good pace. The country is home to some of the largest mall operators in the world and has also a popular culture of food and retail chains, making it an important economic sector. Aside from being one of the biggest employers, the retail industry is also a huge consumer of power, energy, water, plastic and other consumables.

ConservePhil is a two-year public-private partnership (PPP) that seeks to help retailers achieve energy efficiency benchmarking international standards and best practices. It is jointly implemented by ASSIST, TUV Rheinland Philippines and the Philippine Retail Association in cooperation with GIZ, on behalf of German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
