The Need
Corn is a vital pillar of the Philippine agricultural economy, yet smallholder farmers across Cagayan Valley continue to face challenges that limit their potential. Inconsistent yields, variable crop quality, and limited access to institutional markets leave farmers and cooperatives unable to compete — reducing incomes and weakening the efficiency of the supply chain. Without targeted investment in farmer knowledge, cooperative capacity, and post-harvest infrastructure, the structural gaps that hold these communities back will persist, cutting them off from the stability and growth the sector is capable of providing.
The Intervention
AgriSagana I integrated farmer capacity development, cooperative strengthening, and infrastructure improvement into a comprehensive program for corn supply chain development. It equipped over 12,000 farmers with knowledge in Good Agricultural Practices, crop quality management, and sustainable land technology through roll-out training sessions, a CornVention, and an e-learning portal that brought accessible education directly to farming communities. It strengthened cooperatives through financial management and business planning training to build the organizational capacity needed to meet institutional market standards, and upgraded post-harvest facilities through retrofitting — reducing crop losses and improving product quality to support a more resilient and competitive corn supply chain.
