Beyond Shelter: ASSIST Marks UN Poverty Eradication Day by Promoting Household Self-Reliance Through Skills, Jobs, and Entrepreneurship

MANILA, Philippines – A safe home is the foundation every family needs, but staying on your feet takes more than four walls and a roof.

Commemorating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2026 under the UN theme “United for Peace and Human Rights: Safe Homes for All,” ASSIST is focusing on what comes next: giving families the real-world skills, financial stability, and opportunities they need for an enduring economic foundation and break the cycle of poverty for good.

Instead of relying on temporary fixes, we help families stand on their own two feet. Through hands-on job training, digital skills for youth, and support for local entrepreneurs, we give people the tools to build steady sources of income. When you equip people with the right tools, they don’t just survive; they take control of their future and build lasting stability for their families.

To turn this into reality, we work side-by-side with communities in three key ways:

Modern Job Skills & Stable Income

Finding a job isn’t just about getting hired today. It’s about staying relevant tomorrow. ASSIST helps people get steady, well-paying jobs by teaching in-demand skills.

Programs like sustainABILITY add TVET and green skills directly into trade courses, preparing workers for the millions of emerging green jobs across the region. At the same time, programs like NextGen Workforce gives youth and job seekers the practical tools and career readiness training that they need to secure long-term employment.

Bridging the gap between local talent and industry demand helps individuals secure steady, well-paying employment that keeps families financially stable for the long run.

Inclusive Learning & Digital Skills

True economic independence starts in the classroom, yet many underserved communities lack access to digital tools that teach the next generation to be digitally and financially literate.

Initiatives like Adopt-A-Madrasah strengthen traditional local learning spaces across Mindanao by bringing in computer technology, digital literacy, and practical financial education. Early access to these tools ensure young learners don’t get left behind in the digital economy.

Small Business & Research Support

Starting a small business is often the best way out of poverty but local market barriers often make grassroots ventures fragile.

ASSIST is privileged to collaborate with UNDP project research initiatives like the Youth Co:Lab Ecosystem Diagnostics Study to help identify market challenges and policy hurdles facing young Pinoy entrepreneurs. These actionable insights allow us to shape targeted mentorship, local resource access, and business development networks, so that young business owners can turn fragile side-hustles into stable, long-term sources of household income.

Moving beyond poverty isn’t about building a temporary bridge. It’s about creating a permanent pathway forward. As we mark the UN’s International Day for Eradicating Poverty, ASSIST invites corporate partners, academic institutions, and policymakers to join us in impacting workforce upskilling, inclusive education, and youth entrepreneurship worldwide.
