Project SHIELD
Equipping Philippine Healthcare Workers with Life-Saving Infection Prevention and Control Knowledge
The Need
When COVID-19 hit, healthcare facilities became both the frontline of response and one of its greatest vulnerabilities. For healthcare workers serving at-risk populations, the difference between safety and exposure often came down to one thing: knowing the right protocols and having the tools to follow them. Yet many institutions — particularly those outside major urban centers — lacked consistent access to updated infection prevention and control guidelines. Without urgent intervention, the gap in IPC knowledge threatened to compound an already overwhelming crisis.
The Intervention
Project SHIELD integrates online capacity building, facility-level self-assessment, and public health communication. It delivers online IPC training to healthcare workers across the Philippines using globally recognized content from Brown University, equips healthcare facilities with a remote self-assessment tool to evaluate their own infection control practices and identify gaps without waiting for outside support, and amplifies critical COVID-19 IPC information through a targeted social media campaign — ensuring that life-saving knowledge reaches beyond hospital walls and into the wider public consciousness.
