TPSW announces 2014 South Asia Winners

TPSW 2014 Winner: Dark Future by Mouhamed Moustapha

TPSW 2014 was launched with the theme SAFETY: Domestic, Occupational and Road Safety across South Asia. Patrons of TPSW 2014 were Switch Asia, GrAT, Upaya, CSCP, CCI, FNCCI, MDF and the media partner was Media Ray. All the photographers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Maldives were invited toparticipate and gathered over 100 photographs. The prizes were distributed in five categories: overallcwinner, road safety, occupational safety, domestic safety and people’s choice award.

A panel of 5 judges, Claudio Cambon, International Documentary Photograhper, Saradamani Dey, Head of Marketing and Communications Royal Sundaram, Mahati Parashuram, Head of Public atGrundfos, Sadasivam Sabharinath, Photographer at Photographic Society of Madras, and R LRavichandran, Executive Director Eicher Motos Ltd, reviewed the photographs according to relevance of theme, strength of the message conveyed, visual appeal and composition and clarity.

Mouhammed Moustapha was selected as the overall winner for his outstanding portrayal of a sewage cleaner’s life titled, “Dark Future”.

“Safety for Future” by Supriya Biswas won the category award for domestic safety for depicting the security of physically challenged people at home. Amitava Chandra won the category award for occupational safety with this photograph “Both Ways for the Environment” and “Homebound” by Ata Mohammed Adan won the category award for road safety. Shuvjit Das from Bangladesh won the people’s choice award for “Let's Light it Up”, which was decided by the total number of likes on our Facebook page.

Remembering what Dorothea Lange said, “Photography takes an instant outof time, altering life by holding it still”. Similarly, TPSW holds a cluster of such instances that inspire people to alter their approaches towards society.

Ten Photos to Shake the World National Photo Competition (TPSW) is ASSIST's pioneer Social Initiative which was launched in 2011 in the Philippines. It is an annual photo competition developed to stir people's awareness, and to encourage involvement on social action through photography. Since its start, the 4 competitions gathered over 1,500 photo submissions and received support from various sponsors and partners in the private and non-profit sectors.
